Ruin Is A Gift

I worked with a team of Directors recently who had been through a very tough time in re-inventing their business. They saw their many years of hard work and effort succumb to the current financial climate. They needed to re-create the brand and merge as a new, leaner, but stronger company. I'm deligheted to say that they achieved this feat. One of the central themes was accepting that change was critical. This story of ruin was a central theme that helped them create focus. Just like the dilapidated ruins of Rome which once stood proud at the centre of the world, they have become derelict through the years, losing their purpose, the reason they were created. Then as life continues and changes happen, sometimes for the good, sometimes for the bad, out of that change comes a new purpose, a new use for the building, that ruin, for different things and different people.
Business life can be like that too. Sometimes the plans you have are taken off course and the purpose you initially followed becomes redundant, and the feeling that its been wasted or of no use can come to bear.
It’s what you then do with innovation, creativity and perseverance that determine the next outcome.
Always keep your mind open to new ways, new ideas and new people because just like the ruins, at one time they had a purpose. Now, their purpose is for something new. When we look at the financial crisis in recent years and the ruin it has created to so many, think differently about how you can change the world you live in, not the world itself, for that is too big a task.
It’s a journey, so ask yourself, “where do I want to be?”
